With creative vision and client service his fortes, you may already know Randy as the founder and operator of New York Kayak Company, a NYC fixture for 23 years – mostly on Pier 40 in Hudson River Park. Recognizing the community’s need for adventure and connection with nature, he had the foresight to perceive a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to advance sea kayaking as a recreational activity in Manhattan. As a founding member of the Downtown Boathouse, Randy was an advocate for the legislation that created the park and persuasively asserted that paddle sports be part of it at public hearings and community board meetings. Navigating unceasing currents of change, he grew his outdoor specialty business with retail, online, and educational components to great success. He also served as an instructor and guide, and became world-renowned in his field for accurately identifying and meeting client needs.
Randy has planted deep roots in NYC since his arrival in 1981. He initially worked as a guide for a British company that conducted adventure tours of the U.S., deepening his knowledge of the city’s unique neighborhoods and attractions. Fascinated by Manhattan’s vitality, he spent eight years as a residential remodeling contractor, collaborating with designers and home owners while honing his eye for design and detail that greatly benefits his real estate clients.
A native of Minnesota, Randy attended University of Minnesota and bought his first income-producing property at age 19. He’s owned, and served on the Board of Directors of, co-ops in Chelsea and the Gramercy/Union Square area, where he currently lives with his wife, Wendy. His leisure time interests include sea kayaking, stand-up paddle-boarding, skiing, cycling, hiking, fitness training, and reading non-fiction.
